Relaxed Homeschooling

Writer: Heather DickersonHeather Dickerson

I’ve been homeschooling for 15 years now and I can assure you we were definitely not always so laid back.

You do it long enough though and you realize that the true benefit is not just in learning, but in the lifestyle you can cultivate as a homeschool family. Instead of molding your life to fit into a rigid school schedule, you can incorporate learning to flow with your family’s natural rhythms.

Sleeping in later, eating meals together, taking breaks to play in the snow, go on a hike, or jump in epic puddles during a downpour.

Not just sitting at a table and filling out worksheets, but taking what you’ve learned and applying it out in the world.

Reading about different farming techniques, watching a documentary, building a small drip irrigation system and starting seeds in it, then taking a field trip to a hydroponic farm.

Having the time and freedom to dive deep into areas of interest and foster curiosity and exploration.

All of it on a timeline that works best for your family.

When you finally discover the beauty and benefit of a relaxed homeschool lifestyle, there really is no going back.

Forget the grind, forget what you “SHOULD” be doing, and embracing what works best for you and your family.

Trust yourself, trust your kids, and trust me when I say it’ll be one of the best decisions you ever make.
